What Does the National Association of Pet Pharmacies Do?

The National Association of Pet Pharmacies (NAPP) is an independent and impartial organization established with the mission of ensuring the validity of pet pharmacies selling medications in the United States.

Mail order and internet pet pharmacies are increasing in number nearly every day, giving consumers more and more options for purchasing and saving on their pet’s medications. With these new opportunities, however, come new risks. We seek to mitigate these risks by ensuring that pharmacies selling pet medications are licensed to do business by state pharmacy boards, and are selling only medications approved by EPA and FDA for sale in the United States.

All pet pharmacies that are admitted to the NAPP are rigorously screened to ensure that they comply with all state and federal laws, and that they meet the highest level of pharmacy standards.

The Verification Process

Internet-based pharmacy practice sites wishing to become NAPP accredited submit a detailed application to NAPP, which includes the pharmacy’s policies and procedures addressing the NAPP criteria. Licensure information is verified with applicable state boards of pharmacy. The NAPP team reviews the application, policies, and applicant’s Web site, and performs an on-site inspection of the pharmacy’s facilities. Once the policies and procedures as well as the operations of the pharmacy appear to meet the intent of the NAPP criteria, permission to display the NAPP Seal is granted and the verified information about the pharmacy is posted on the NAPP Web site.

Clicking on the NAPP Seal links the user to the NAPP Web site that then verifies that the Seal is indeed posted on a NAPP-accredited site. If so, the user is then shown pharmacy-specific information, including licensure information.
